Family:

In 1998 I married the love of my life, Jennifer Cottingham. God has used her in a magnificent way to encourage and challenge me to become the man God wants me to be. We have two precious girls—Kaitlyn and Peyton, and yes, they have me wrapped around their little fingers. Although I wanted a big male dog, the girls selected a miniature female Schnauzer and named her Zoey. They may have picked and named her, but she is my dog.

Ministry:

It was never my plan to become a pastor. I grew up as a preacher’s kid and saw some ugly things take place in churches. God had a different plan for my life. One year, while I was experiencing the consequences of my sinful actions, God called me to serve in a local church. Since that time, I have had the privilege to minister to children, youth, college, and adults. Currently, I serve as a senior pastor and cannot imagine doing anything else with my life. It is my desire to build and lead a local church where vulnerable, real, and broken people are loved, healed, and transformed by Jesus.

Education:

I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Theology and English from University of Mobile in 1999 and my Master of Arts in Theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (SWBTS) in 2002. In May of 2013 I graduated with my Doctor of Ministry from SWBTS and wrote a dissertation on the relationship of the doctrine of the priesthood of all believers to preaching. This educational journey has humbled me. It seems like the more I know the more I realize that there is so much that I don’t know. While for now I am finished with formal education, I will always be a student, especially of God’s Word.

Passions:

In my free time, I love spending time with my family, working in the yard, reading non-fiction books, and exercising.

Favorite Books:

The Bible, Jerry Bridges’ Pursuit of Holiness, Kent Hughes’ Disciplines of a Godly Man, Robert Owen Roberts’ Repentance, Henry and Richard Blackaby’s Spiritual Leadership.

Family:

I met my wife Jessica while serving in her home church in Alvarado, TX and we tied the knot in August of 2010. Jessica is a first grade teacher at Purvis Lower Elementary School. We have a 3 year old daughter, Addie Jane, and a 1 year old son, Barrett.

Ministry:

I started serving in my first church in the spring of my senior year in high school in 2002. From there, I’ve had the opportunity to serve in churches in Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi. Jessica and I are excited to see what the Lord has in store for us here at Providence!

Education:

I graduated from Louisiana College with a Bachelor of Music in Church Music. I am currently working on my Master of Arts in Worship through Liberty University.

Hobbies:

I love spending time with my wife and kids. I like to cook! Especially grilling. I love to hunt and fish but am VERY amateur at both of these activities. I love cows. Reading about them, watching them, thinking about having a ranch…

Favorite Books:

I mostly read cow books…

Family:

I met my wife Cali in 2013 while we were working at a Christian summer camp named Lake Forest Ranch. We starting dating after our second summer and got married after our third on October 11, 2015. We are expecting our first child, David Randall Sims, on Sept. 8, 2016. Our relationship began while we were both ministering to children and students and we now serve him as a student ministry team together. She is definitely the better half.

Ministry:

I first felt called to youth ministry when I was in 8th grade.

That call was affirmed through my leadership as a student and college intern at Temple Baptist Church here in Hattiesburg. After serving at Lake Forest Ranch for three summers as a counselor (2 summers) and an intern (1 summer), I had no doubt that God had given me a passion and call to student ministry. However, I tried to make that happen on my own terms (which involved much different plans) and God set me straight by directing me here to Providence. He is continually teaching me and humbling me as He equips me for His work.

Education:

After graduating from Oak Grove High School here in Hattiesburg, I attended the University of Southern Mississippi and earned my Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies and minor in Business Administration. While God taught me much during this period and I enjoyed my time in school, I am happy to be finished (at least for the time being).

Passions and Hobbies:

My favorite pastime is spending time with my family and friends. Other than that, I enjoy being outdoors and playing/watching just about any sport. I also enjoy a good movie (Mostly sports movies. Did I say I like sports?)

Favorite Books:

The Bible, just about anything by Francis Chan, and I like a good fantasy fiction book every now and then.
